Year 8 Olympic Tour

Year 8 Olympic Tour 2012     The Year 8 Leavers were fortunate to enjoy a guided tour by bus and on foot of some of the main venues for the London Olympics 2012. After meeting our guide, Danielle, we stopped by the Docklands opposite the Thames Barrier and played an Olympic game in a circle, with national teams informally allocated. We drove past Woolwich, noting the shooting centre, and took the ferry to Greenwich, enjoying lunch in Greenwich Park, with its fine views across the Thames to the new olympic stadium, as well as the more traditional Royal Naval Hospital. There was an Anglo-American tug of war and a 100 metre race, won by Luke Sebastian. We then journeyed to Stratford to see the stadium and the aquatic centre, velodrome and basketball ‘meringue’ before a final stop at the Westfield Shopping Centre. We learned a lot of intriguing facts about the History of the games and how the 2012 games have been funded and organised, with sustainability as a key theme.                                                                                                                                              RH (Author: Robert Henderson)
